Here’s my shoddy shot to please the deranged,
To muddy the pot and tease the tame –
Past plods a dog with fleas and mange
Moss on the log. The seasons change.

It’s currently Summer –
The boys stir
Whilst the engine is humming
In the noisy car
Sun stabs through the window
On drool and moisture
A spit pool of minnow,
Limpets and oysters

I capture your mackerel,
Splash one into my satchel

We wandered a mile to watch the deluge
On hills and earth piles to catch the muse,
Then floundered in file, like cats in twos –
Surrounded the child. And that is abuse.

There’s no need for weed killer
Clothe the kids; feed the miller
Rust
With children gone, his eyes are weathered
They’ve moved on; the ties are severed
Rust

Rust is the grass that learns of the horse,
It’s a kick to the arse by turns of force.
The fear it won’t last curls into your pores
And replaces your masts with surfaces coarse


Rust is the witch with the matted hair
Who cusses and quips – “there’s cats in there…”
Then bustles and trips you whilst her cattle stare
Cud-chewing, adrift as to how that’ll fare.

I capture your mackerel,
Splash one into my satchel


Under layers of hay
In the barn I pray
Appeal strongly for a surge of me
Some good to deter me from purgatory
Strength to avoid; strength to evade
To send and hoist me from this decay.

In a sense, rust is the oil slick –
Rodents scrambling in boiling sick
Innocence hammered into soil, thick
Outmoded, damaged, a loyal dick.
